King Whalay unveils a soulful afro-pop Letter to love and longing "Hello Vero"

King Whalay's most recent release, "Hello Vero," is an authentic letter, a late-night conversation, and an emotional ruminating experience in one. While still demonstrating his ability to tether rhythms with narrative, King Whalay reminds us once again why his voice is quickly earning a reputation as one of the most important voices in Afro-Pop today.

"Hello Vero" begins with a laid-back yet captivating vibe that captures your interest immediately and sets a pondering atmosphere. Whalay's vocals feel soft but weighty,  as if he's having a share-the-gossip kind of talk with you. The production feels full but not overly full, as it gives space for vocals to breathe. The percussion is subtle, the synths are warm, and the harmonies stack in such a way that you can't help but feel as if you're in your comfort zone and still compelled to listen to the song over and over again.

Maybe, most poignantly, "Hello Vero" feels so personal. It feels less like a studio piece of music and more like a piece torn from Whalay's diary. Whalay plays on the theme of longing, connection, and vulnerability through his lyrics, but he balances the sadness with hope. The visual complements the honesty and emotion that exist in the song with shots of Whalay in moments of solitude and raw emotion.
