Brandi and the Alexanders are a psych-rock and soul collective based out of New York City that blends cosmopolitan soul with gritty funk energy. The band is inspired by icons such as Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan but also taps into the subversive pulse of Chic and the adventurous late-era experimentation of Marvin Gaye. Their sound is a contradiction: slick and gritty, happy and heavy-hearted, but always rooted in relentless groove and emotional truth.
With their new single, “The Heart Don’t Heal,” the band explores one of their most personal stories to date. The song doesn’t chase the comfort of resolution but dwells in the uncomfortable truth that some heartbreaks don’t resolve; they linger, they evolve, they echo. It’s more a sonic confrontation with emotional permanence than a ballad of recovery.
The track glides across a heavy pocket groove that’s hypnotic and bruised. Fading memories spread across the mix with saturated Rhodes keys. Spiky call and response vocals bring in urgency and tension. The guitar work is deliberately brittle, wire thin and almost nervous, cutting through the warmth like a reminder that healing isn’t always a straight line. The production is crate-digger textured and analogue, giving the track a lived-in, almost haunted feel.
