Snoop Dogg’s latest single from his highly anticipated Dr. Dre-produced album Missionary brings a bold reimagining of The Police’s 1979 classic “Message in a Bottle.” Featuring a sampled or replayed version of Andy Summers’ iconic guitar riff and fresh vocals from Police frontman Sting, the track blends nostalgia with innovation.
“Me and Snoop made a recording of Message in a Bottle, which he’s called something else,” Sting revealed in a recent BBC Radio 2 interview. “I played the guitar and sang on it, but Snoop also sings on this, which is quite a revelation to me.” Sting praised Snoop’s artistry, calling him “a very nice man,” while Snoop described their collaboration as a dream come true. “It’s like meeting someone you’ve always admired and finding out they’re everything you imagined,” he said.
The track, co-produced by Dre and the ICU, showcases Snoop’s evolution as both a rapper and singer, with his confident vocals standing alongside Sting’s adaptive style. The duo even harmonizes at one point, creating an unexpected and seamless fusion of their unique sounds.
Missionary, set to release on December 13, marks the 30th anniversary of Snoop’s groundbreaking debut album, Doggystyle. Reflecting on their journey, Dr. Dre remarked, “We were kids at that time... This one is gonna show a different level of maturity with Snoop’s lyrics and my music.”
Fans can expect a track that honors the past while charting bold new territory, as Snoop and Sting prove that musical boundaries are meant to be broken
