Gena Perala delivers a striking new rooted single “Machete”

Vancouver-based singer-songwriter Gena Perala sharpens her storytelling edge with “Machete,” a striking new single rooted in alt-country and intimate indie-folk textures. Raised on the carnival circuit, Perala’s relationship with impermanence and motion has always shaped her songwriting,  and here, it cuts clean.

"Machete" starts out with a lot of tension, like a spaghetti western, and then slowly builds with pedal steel and other quiet instruments. The song has a movie-like quality; you can almost see the dust rising from a lonely road at dusk. But underneath that mood is something very personal: the moment when clarity replaces illusion.

Perala's voice is both soft and defiant. She doesn't go too far; instead, she lets the song's emotional sharpness hit her naturally. The result is haunting but also empowering, especially for people who are learning to trust their gut and take up space without feeling bad about it. Machete is powerful because it is limited. Gena Perala shows that the cleanest cuts can sometimes be the most powerful.
