Mats Skimmelå new song “Spikmyren” fuses two musical traditions and explores the natural connection between jazz and Swedish folk music. Rather than treating the genres as worlds apart, the track highlights a shared harmonic quality that makes their meeting feel natural. “Spikmyren” explores that relationship in its own way, alone. Mats Skimmelå fully wrote, arranged, and produced the track, a self organized creative vision built on the relations between two musical languages.
What makes the release especially interesting is its emphasis on compatibility rather than contrast. Jazz and Swedish folk music may be culturally and musically very different, but their shared use of minor harmonies creates a strong link between them. Skimmelå uses that connection as the basis for “Spikmyren,” letting the piece live in a space where the traditions can complement each other.
