Dr. Rayo, JOUJOU and Aurelio Conde ignites a dark tropical vibe with “Mexicali Tropical”

Dr. Rayo’s latest single, “Mexicali Tropical,” is a collaborative effort between the artist formerly known as Red Jesus, JOUJOU, and Aurelio Conde. The track signals not only the arrival of a new song, but also an artist reawakened after years of traveling around the world, making his mark.

After circuiting Mexico’s brilliant Festival Marvin, followed by sold-out shows at the Montreux Jazz Festival and Germany’s Fusion Festival, Dr. Rayo brings a sound from Madrid that doesn’t play so expectedly. “Mexicali Tropical” is an odyssey that reinterprets his tropical roots with a brooding, hypnotic undertow that pulls listeners into an irresistible rhythm.

His third track on a remixed tape featuring JOUJOU, Aurelio Conde, richens textures with a style infused from the rest of the album written up down below and other groups, such as Galaxie 500, combined with Dr. Rayo's glimpses toward its Latin clichés, whereby another line to get drunk or high can transform into an out-of-the-blue sound, alluring and unworldly at once. This single is an experience, an insight into the mind of an artist reinventing himself yet respecting the intricate cultural fabric that shaped him.

Fans who have followed Dr. Rayo from the early Red Jesus days will recognize that familiar passion, reinvented. At the same time, the hypnotic energy and new soundscape will lure in newcomers. “Mexicali Tropical” beckons you to listen, feel, and step into a tropical world of shadows and depth. Dr. Rayo’s travels from Mexico City to Madrid, from festival stages to intimate studios, have all led to this release, a testament that evolution in sound isn’t only about sound, but about transformation.
