Bhy2r’s new release, "Shatta Carnival Riddim" is a tiny colorful tale that unfolds itself out of a set of displaced beats and expectations. At its center is Déman, a young man eagerly anticipating his favorite time of the year, Carnival. Sure enough, there’s the excitement, and the plan is locked in, and the day feels like a jolt of electricity. There’s even romance in the air, once a date with Allys is lined up for later that day. All signs point to celebration, until reality re-enters in the most human way possible.
Déman awakens to a horrendous toothache, and all at once the gaiety of Carnival is countered by a sense of discomfort, tension, and uncertainty. It’s that little twist that gives this song its gut-wrenching feel. Bhy2r takes a relatable squiggle of a moment many of us have experienced and sets it smack dab in the middle of what’s supposed to be the happiest day on the calendar. "Shatta Carnival Riddim" dwells in contrast. Excitement clashes with frustration. Anticipation wrestles with discomfort. The story’s told with a real-time urgency, and listeners can feel the conflict within Déman as the day starts.
